What To Wear and How To Encourage Happy Kids for Family Photos
Are you wondering what to wear for a family photoshoot or worried that younger kids might not be their happiest? I totally get it and have 2 young kids myself. You’re investing time and money in your family photos, so you probably want to look and feel your best. That’s why I put together this post to share what I know photographs beautifully and how to prep your kids for getting their photos taken. Let’s dive in.
Here are EFP’s pro tips on how to style your family and encourage happy kids for and during a photoshoot:
Styling your family for group photos:
I love a solid or neutrals. Whites, creams, grays, and pops of seasonal colors look great on camera. I would avoid logos or loud patterns. Lightweight layers (e.g., jackets) add nice variety and elevate your appearance.
Your feet will be in the photos, so make sure the shoes compliment the outfit just as much.
Remember, don't match, compliment! Don't all wear the exact same color or patterned tops, instead opt for pieces that complement one another.
Honestly? Make sure you feel fabulous. Wear what makes you happy and confident!
How to encourage happy kids before and during a photoshoot:
1 Week Out: Hype it up!
Start talking about the photoshoot with your kids. Let them know what we'll be doing, and what they can expect. Have little kids practice smiling or making their favorite goofy faces. If you’ve got older kids, ask them what types of photos they want for themselves! For example, teenagers might want candid photos for IG, a behind-the-scenes video for TikTok, or a siblings shot that isn’t stiff and posed. I love to hear what they want from the photoshoot, too.
1 Day Out: Set expectations and pack or promise snacks (bribes).
Let your kids know tomorrow is the big day (more hype!), that they'll get treats if they come with a happy attitude and show off those smiles. Plan a reward after the shoot (going out for ice cream, for instance).
Day-of: we’re here to help!
Try not to stress if a nap was missed or of an inevitable melt down (I have 2 young kids myself... I get it!). EFP family sessions are all about fun, walk-and-talk, laid-back family time. I love photographing families while they run and play.
Good luck, Mama! I know family photoshoots can be a lot of work to prep… you’ve got this! I want you to LOVE your photos and the experience.
